Borders

I participated in a rather animated discussion tonight about wether closing our borders would actually make the United States a safer place to live. In my opinion, it would definitely help.

The US/Canada & US/Mexico borders should be closed and cordoned off using the full force of our Military and by whatever means of surveillance is necessary. No illegal crossings of any kind should be allowed. Period. Legal immigration should be halted until we can be reasonably sure of who is entering the country that they are not a security risk. Foreign airlines that refuse to share passenger manifests should be refused permission to land until they comply.

All illegal aliens should be identified — especially those who are in the United States on expired visas — and be arrested, detained, and deported. Visitors and workers currently in the country on valid visas should be subjected to background checks — if anything questionable is found, they should be deported. It’s important to remember that the Constitution was intended to protect the rights of citizens, not those who just happen to be inside our borders.

Our harbors and ports should be closed until we can adequately inspect each and every shipping container upon their arrival. Approximately 5000 shipping containers arrive daily. Under our current spot-check program, fewer than 5% of these are actually inspected. If a biological or nuclear device is smuggled into the US, this is most likely the avenue of entry. We must inspect all overseas shipping containers immediately upon their arrival, regardless of the costs involved.

Will this protect us from home-grown terrorists like Timothy Mcveigh? No. But it will make great strides towards reducing the chances of another 9/11 style terrorist attack.

Remain vigilant. Keep your eyes open.
